Gladden Spit - Caribbean Coast
Tobacco Reef is one of those Utila sites we keep coming back to. Heading out from the main harbour, it’s a quick boat ride, but feels a world away from the busy dive shops. We love it for its sheer variety, even on a single dive. Drop in and you’re immediately enveloped by schools of chromis and grunts, a shifting, shimmering curtain that opens to reveal the reef wall. Our favourite part is the gentle slope where the reef transitions into sand. This is where you really need to slow down. We've spent ages here, watching Atlantic spadefish drift by like animated dinner plates and spying slender filefish tucked amongst the gorgonians. Keep an eye on the sandy patches for reef scorpionfish, masters of disguise, and if you’re lucky, a batfish shuffling across the bottom. We’ve even seen tarpon cruise by in the bluer water, their scales catching the sunlight like flashes of chrome. The coral here, particularly the blushing star coral, is healthy and forms some interesting overhangs. It’s a site that rewards a calm fin kick and a keen eye, perfect for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a vibrant Caribbean reef rather than just chasing the big stuff.
