MEMPHIS (PROBABLY) - Ksamil

We’re calling this the Memphis (Probably) because, well, the identification is a bit murky, but that just adds to the adventure. Dropping onto this wreck in Ksamil feels like stepping back into history, right into the heart of a maritime mystery. At a comfortable 9 metres, it’s a site that practically begs you to take your time. You can trace the outline of what was once a grand 96-metre steamship, the sheer scale of it impressive even now. The wreck itself, built in 1892, has been down here since 1916, giving the Mediterranean a long time to reclaim it. The metal has softened with age, draped in sponges and anemones, which makes for fantastic macro photography. We love spending time exploring the collapsed superstructure, imagining the decks, and peeking into the darker recesses where groupers often lurk. Our favourite part is the bow section; it’s still remarkably intact and full of little hidey-holes for octopus. Visibility can swing a bit here depending on the season, but even on an average day, the sheer size of the wreck creates a dramatic silhouette against the blue. It’s a cracker for divers who appreciate a bit of historical intrigue with their bubbles.
