DEIPARA - Naples & Campania
The Deipara is one of our absolute favourite wrecks in Campania, a real standout despite its tragic end. We love diving this site early, before the boat traffic picks up, when the light filters down through the usually clear water. She went down in 1973 after hitting the Scoglio Vervece rock, just off Sorrento, settling upright on the seabed at a consistent 42 metres. That depth means it’s definitely one for experienced divers, but the reward is a compact, largely intact motor vessel just begging to be explored. The wreck itself is a magnet for all sorts of Mediterranean critters. Look inside the cargo holds; we’ve often seen big conger eels poking their heads out, and the deckhouse often has schools of sardines fluttering around. The metalwork is draped in gorgonians, deep reds and oranges that glow in your torch beam, and the occasional lobster or spider crab scuttles through the shadows. We’d suggest a sidemount configuration here, it makes navigating the tighter spots, like the engine room, much easier. There’s a quiet solemnity to the Deipara, a little slice of history now completely reclaimed by the sea.
