EVEREST - Naples & Campania
Everest. The name itself suggests something monumental, and this wreck off Capri lives up to it. We’re talking about a serious hunk of metal here, a 114-meter motor vessel that went down in 1975. The sheer scale of it, sitting upright on the seabed, is what hits you first. Dropping down, the bow is often the first section to emerge from the blue, usually swarming with silvery baitfish. We love tracing the deck, noting how the masts lie across the sand, forming artificial reefs in themselves. The holds are open, inviting gentle penetration for those comfortable with overhead environments. Inside, you might find conger eels peering from dark corners and scuttling spider crabs. Because the wreck is so large and in relatively shallow water, around 9 meters, you get fantastic light penetration, illuminating the growth on the steel. Schools of damselfish flutter around the superstructure, and we’ve often spotted octopuses tucked into crevices. Our favourite part has to be the stern section; the prop is still there, adorned with colourful sponges, a real photography hotspot. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, allowing you to really appreciate the history and the marine life that has claimed it as home. Just keep an eye on boat traffic when surfacing; it can get busy around Capri.
