JAMES RUSSELL LOVELL - Naples & Campania

The James Russell Lovell isn’t about huge pelagics or kaleidoscope reefs. This is a journey back in time, just a short swim from the Naples shoreline. We love it for its sheer accessibility and the story it tells. This isn't a deep dive, peaking at a humble four metres, making it perfect for newer divers or those who just want a relaxed surface interval. The wreck itself, a large freighter sunk during World War II, lies surprisingly intact. As you approach, the hull rises from the sandy bottom, shadowed by the dappled sunlight. We always take our time here, tracing the outline of the decks, imagining the ship in its prime. Schools of damselfish flutter around the superstructure, while the hold, open to the light, often shelters small groupers and moray eels. Look closely, and you’ll spot nudibranchs clinging to the rusty metal, adding a splash of unexpected colour. It’s a gentle exploration, a tangible piece of history reclaimed by the sea. Our tip? Go in the late afternoon; the light plays beautifully off the wreck, making for some moody photos.
