MANZONI - Naples & Campania
Manzoni. This isn't just a hunk of metal on the seabed, it’s a proper dive into history. We’re talking about a merchant vessel, torpedoed by British aircraft in 1943, sitting upright and mostly intact at 50 metres. It feels like a ghost ship, really. The depth means decent bottom time is tricky, but what you get to see is worth the planning. You descend into the blue, and slowly, the silhouette of the ship appears. The bow points towards Capri, and the stern is a little more broken, but the cargo holds are open, inviting exploration. We love poking around the superstructure, imagining the hurried final moments. Look closely at the deck, especially around the mast, and you’ll often find conger eels peering out from gaps, along with plenty of scorpionfish tucked into crevices. The sheer scale is what gets you, the size of it resting there. It’s a dive for experienced deep divers comfortable with deco, no question. Our favourite part? Kicking along the deck, feeling that quiet reverence for a piece of the past. Go early in the morning for the best chance of calm seas and less boat traffic. The visibility here can really change things, so pick your day.
