MAURO SANTE - Naples & Campania
Mauro Sante is a proper deep dive, sitting upright at 55 metres off Marina di Camerota. It’s a cargo ship, 46 metres long, and while the depth means it’s for experienced technical divers only, it’s worth the effort. The wreck itself is largely intact, a real time capsule since it went down in 1971. We love dropping onto the stern and seeing the superstructure rise towards you out of the blue. The cargo holds are open, revealing the empty space where goods once sat. What we really appreciate here is the way the Mediterranean has reclaimed it. You'll find thick carpets of yellow and red gorgonians clinging to the rails and deck, especially around the bow. Schools of snapper often hold station above the mast, and we’ve seen some surprisingly large groupers patrolling the holds. The visibility here can be excellent, often pushing 30 metres, which makes the descent feel like flying over a submerged monument. It’s a quiet, humbling dive, perfect for those who appreciate history and the slow creep of nature.
