Relitto di Mar Grande - Naples & Campania
The Relitto di Mar Grande, just off Capri, is the perfect example of how the Mediterranean takes a wreck and makes it its own. We’ve explored more than our fair share of sunken ships, but there's something about this one that sticks with you. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the sheer scale, a vast cargo ship resting upright, almost perfectly preserved. It feels enormous as you glide over the deck, the light filtering through the water creating long shadows that dance over the rusted metal. Visibility here can be exceptional, often 20 metres or more on a good day, giving you plenty of time to take in the details. We love navigating the cavernous cargo holds, where schools of amberjacks often swirl, and barracuda hang motionless in the current. Look closely, and you’ll spot octopuses tucked into crevices and moray eels peeking out from behind collapsed bulkheads. For photographers, the engine room is a real treat, a tangle of machinery and pipes now completely overgrown with sponges and anemones. We’d suggest going in the late morning; the sun angle really brings out the colours. This site is a truly atmospheric dive, especially suited for those with a bit of wreck experience who appreciate history married with vibrant marine life.
