VENIZIA - Naples & Campania
Venizia isn't your typical wreck dive, and that’s precisely why we love it. This isn't about penetration or depth, because you're in a mere three metres of water. Instead, it’s about a unique blend of history and biology, easily accessible for pretty much anyone with a mask and fins. This isn't some scattered debris field. We're talking about a Roman cargo ship, remarkably intact given its age. You can clearly make out the hull, some of the amphorae it was carrying, even timbers that once formed its structure. It feels less like a dive site and more like an archaeological dig you're allowed to swim through. The light plays beautifully here, even on an overcast day, filtering through the shallow water and illuminating the ancient timbers. We've seen octopus tucked into crevices, small schools of ornate wrasse flitting between the amphorae, and nudibranchs grazing on the algae that now coats the Roman remains. It’s a slow dive, one for lingering and appreciating, perfect for photographers or anyone who likes their history with a side of marine life. Our top tip? Go early in the morning before any surface traffic stirs up the sediment. You want that clear, undisturbed view of the past.
