MV Cominoland - Gozo

There's something about the MV Cominoland that keeps us coming back. Maybe it's the sheer size of the thing, or the way it sits upright, almost daring you to explore every deck. She's a ferry, sunk deliberately in 2006, and rests on a sandy bottom, her stern around 40 metres, with the bow shallower, closer to 30. We love how accessible it is; even newer wreck divers can poke around the superstructure, peering into the former passenger decks where schools of damsel fish now flit through the old windows. For the more experienced, the engine room is a proper penetration, dark and silty, but worth it if you're comfortable. You’ll often spot dusky groupers lurking in the shadows there, or a grumpy conger eel peering from a pipe. Outside, the decks are draped in scarlet coral and bushy coral, a vibrant contrast to the ship's rust. We've seen some impressive painted combers patrolling the rails and even a loggerhead turtle cruising past the bridge on one memorable dive. Current can pick up here, especially in the channel, so we’d always suggest checking conditions with a local dive centre before you head out. It’s a site that always delivers.
