XLENDI - Gozo

Xlendi is a firm favourite with us, especially if you love a good, explorable wreck. Dropped in 1999, this old Gozo ferry, originally a Danish train transporter, sits upright at 40 metres. You descend onto the bridge, often with barracuda circling, before finning along the upper deck. The Xlendi’s real charm lies in its penetrable spaces – the car deck is wide open, letting in shafts of light that reveal schools of damselfish darting between the support pillars. It’s got an atmospheric, slightly eerie feel inside, but it’s never tight. We always make time to poke around the bow and stern, where the resident moray eels tend to hang out. The stern deck is particularly good for spotting scorpionfish camouflaged on the plating. Look closely at the hull too; nudibranchs love the growth there. While it’s a deeper dive, the lack of strong current and the wreck’s intact structure make it manageable for confident advanced divers. It’s definitely one for a nitrox mix, giving you those precious extra minutes to soak it all in.
