City of Rockland Wreck - New England
The City of Rockland wreck offers a real glimpse into New England's maritime past, a proper piece of history lying just off the coast. This isn't some perfectly preserved ghost ship; she's broken up, scattered over the seabed, but that's precisely her charm. We love poking around the debris field, imagining her final moments, and finding those recognisable features – a boiler here, a propeller shaft there. She sits in pretty shallow water, making it an accessible dive for most, even when the New England chop is up top. Visibility can be a bit variable, as it often is around here, but when it clears, you're treated to a surprisingly vibrant ecosystem. Lobsters are everywhere, tucked into every crevice, and we’ve seen some seriously chunky pollock cruising the larger sections of steel. Keep an eye out for wolfish too, sometimes they’ll peer out from beneath a plate. It’s a rummage, a treasure hunt really, best suited for those who appreciate the story behind the metal as much as the life that now calls it home. Our favourite time to dive her is on a calm, sunny morning, just after high tide, when the light penetrates the water nicely and picks out the details.
