ANNA M - Tyre
The Anna M, a casualty of a 1979 collision, rests upright at 30 metres off Tyre, a compelling target for divers who appreciate a good story with their wreck. She’s not huge, about 41 metres long, but her relatively intact state makes for a fascinating exploration. We love how the stern section is still largely complete, the propeller often visible, giving you a real sense of her former life as a motor vessel. What makes the Anna M really stand out for us, beyond the history, is the way marine life has claimed her. You'll often find schooling fish, like damselfish and juvenile barracuda, using the wheelhouse and cargo holds for shelter. Penetration is possible for experienced wreck divers, offering glimpses into what would have been crew quarters, now home to pipefish and the occasional moray eel. We always suggest bringing a good torch; the light plays beautifully through the wreck’s skeletal structure, especially around midday. This site isn't for the absolute beginner; while the depth isn't extreme, the wreck environment demands good buoyancy control and an appreciation for its delicate nature. It’s a genuine slice of maritime history, beautifully reclaimed by the sea.

The ANNA M was a Greek-flagged motor vessel built in 1956, a typical general cargo ship of its time, plying the trade routes of the Mediterranean. For over two decades, it served as an unremarkable workhorse of the sea, transporting goods between various ports. Its career, however, came to an abrupt and unexpected end in the autumn of 1979.
On November 16, 1979, the ANNA M was peacefully at anchor in Tripoli Roads, Lebanon. Under circumstances that remain unclear, the Lebanese motor vessel MV SEA HORSE collided with the stationary ship. The impact was catastrophic, breaching the hull of the ANNA M and causing it to take on water rapidly. The vessel sank at its anchorage, coming to rest on the seabed and marking the final chapter of its maritime life.
Today, the wreck of the ANNA M lies at a depth of 30 meters off the coast of Tyre, making it an excellent dive for advanced recreational divers. The vessel sits upright and is largely intact, offering a classic wreck exploration experience. Divers can swim along its decks, peer into its cargo holds, and explore the superstructure, which is now draped in marine growth. The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, attracting schools of fish and other local sea life, providing a fascinating glimpse into both maritime history and underwater ecology.
