ELOUT - Sumatra

Elout, off the coast of Sumatra, offers a poignant dive into history. This steamship, bombed and sunk by Japanese aircraft in January 1942, now rests at a shallow 11 meters, making it accessible for most open water divers. The wreck itself, classified as dangerous in some reports due to its age and wartime demise, is a skeletal structure. We found it’s become home to a fascinating array of critters, from schools of snapper darting through the rusted hull to curious nudibranchs clinging to the encrusted metal. It’s a somber, evocative dive, but one that rewards careful exploration and an appreciation for the past.
