GYOSHIN MARU - Tioman Island

The Gyoshin Maru, a tanker that met its end in 1944, offers a fantastic wreck dive off Tioman. We’d classify it as a solid standalone dive, not just a bonus. Lying at a comfortable 20 metres, the wreck broke in two when it went down, creating distinct sections to explore. We love drifting through the hold, feeling the cool shadow as you pass from one opening to another, often bumping into batfish that seem to claim the interior. The forward section is particularly interesting, with a large propeller still largely intact – a great photo opportunity if you time your buoyancy right. Around the hull, we always spot a good number of schooling fusiliers, sometimes so dense they really do dim the light. Keep an eye out for nudibranchs on the deck plates and the occasional turtle resting under an overhang. Visibility here can vary, but on a good day, the light penetrates beautifully, illuminating the coral growth that's slowly reclaiming the metal. It’s a site that suits divers who enjoy a bit of history with their marine life, and it’s generally sheltered enough for those still getting comfortable with wreck penetration.
