La Buga Dive & Surf - Caribbean Coast

La Buga Dive & Surf on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is a delightful surprise, especially for those who appreciate the smaller, often overlooked creatures. We love it for its sheer density of interesting bottom dwellers. It’s not about dramatic drop-offs or massive pelagics here; think macro, think patient observation. The reef itself is a busy, low-profile affair, perfect for crawling along slowly. Keep your eyes peeled for the Warteye Stargazer, a genuinely bizarre fish that blends so perfectly into the sand, you’ll swim past it a dozen times before you spot one. We’ve also had fantastic luck finding Textile Blennies peeking out from their holes and Dwarf Wrasses darting through the coral. Our favourite is probably the Black Moray, often just their heads visible from a crevice, looking quite grumpy. This site is fantastic for photographers or anyone who enjoys a slow, deliberate dive, seeking out the camouflaged and the curious. It’s a wonderfully tranquil experience, a real counterpoint to some of the punchier Pacific dives.
