サマータイム - Izu Peninsula

サマータイム, on the Izu Peninsula, is one of those sites we always come back to when we’re in the area. It’s not about huge pelagics here, but rather a fantastic showcase for Japan’s macro life, with a few surprises if you know where to look. We love the gentle slope of the reef, which makes for easy navigation and extended bottom times, allowing us to really slow down and appreciate the small stuff. The sponges and hydroids are a canvas for nudibranchs you might not find anywhere else, often in electric blues and fiery oranges. Keep an eye out for the Porous Cowry, its shell almost disappearing into the surrounding rock. Our favourite part has to be the subtle interplay of light filtering through the kelp, creating a dappled, ethereal feel, especially on a sunny morning. This really suits divers who enjoy a slower pace, focusing on photography or just savouring the intricate details of the reef. We’d suggest going early to avoid any weekend crowds; the site can get busy, but it’s large enough that you can usually find your own quiet corner. If you're patient, you might even spot a juvenile scorpionfish camouflaged amongst the rubble.
