Nanton Reef - Manitoba & Prairie Lakes

Brant Reef has a way of getting under your skin, in the best possible sense. We’ve found ourselves drawn back here repeatedly, especially on those days when the current is just right, a gentle push rather than a full-on sprint. Drop down, and the first thing you notice is the sheer scale of the place. It’s not about flashy colours, but the sheer abundance of life that seems to cloak every surface. We love the way the light filters through the kelp forest, creating these ethereal shafts that illuminate the massive sunflower stars clinging to the rocks. Keep an eye out for the plainfin midshipmen, usually tucked into crevices, their bioluminescent "portholes" glowing faintly. Our favourite moments here involve spotting the giant octopuses, often camouflaged so perfectly you’d swim right past if you weren’t actively looking for that tell-tale eye. We’d suggest going at slack tide if you can manage it; it just gives you more time to really absorb the details. The density of creatures like sidestriped and Pacific glass shrimp, combined with the occasional spiny dogfish cruising by, makes for a truly captivating dive, perfect for anyone who appreciates the quieter, more intricate side of the underwater world.
