Lycoming Wreck - Ontario Great Lakes
The Lycoming Wreck, sitting somewhere in the depths of the Ontario Great Lakes, is a real favourite of ours for its sheer scale and the eerie quiet that comes with diving a piece of history. What we love about this wreck isn't just its size, but how the cold freshwater has preserved it. You can glide along the deck, past the giant engine blocks, and almost feel the ship's last moments. It's an experience that really puts you in touch with the region's maritime past. We'd suggest this site for experienced wreck divers who appreciate exploration over colourful reef fish. The visibility here can be tricky, often a silty green, but when it's good, you can make out the intricate details of the propulsion system and the pilot house. Look for the schools of freshwater drum that often take shelter in the holds. They're big, curious fish, and encountering them in the gloom of the wreck adds a certain drama to the dive. The lack of current usually means a relaxed exploration, but we always advise caution with overhead environments.
