M I Wilcox Wreck - Ontario Great Lakes
Diving the M.I. Wilcox, for us, is like stepping back into a forgotten chapter of Great Lakes history. This isn't a deep dive, making it accessible for open water divers comfortable with a little chill. We love tracing the distinct lines of the old schooner, her timbers still holding their shape surprisingly well despite decades on the lakebed. You’ll find her resting upright, offering easy penetration into the cargo holds if you're appropriately trained and equipped. The visibility here can be excellent, especially late summer, letting you appreciate the delicate lacework of zebra mussels that now encrust every surface, turning the wreck into a textured, living sculpture. Look closely, and you'll spot resident freshwater gobies peeking from crevices, and the occasional schooling perch drifting over the deck. Our favourite moments are often spent just drifting along her rail, imagining the crew on deck, a tangible connection to the past in the quiet, cool embrace of Lake Huron. It’s a truly rewarding dive for anyone who appreciates maritime history and wants to experience a wreck that tells a story without needing to go to extreme depths.
