Bourinot Reef - Québec

Bajo Los Colorados is one of those spots that often gets overlooked, but we think it’s a genuine Key’s standout. We’ve found it’s usually less crowded than some of the more famous sites, meaning you get to soak in the atmosphere a bit more. The reef itself isn't a dramatic wall, but rather a sprawling, vibrant area of low-lying corals and sponges, absolutely perfect for leisurely bottom time. We’ve drifted along, watching schools of common mojarra shimmer past and spotted juvenile cowfish tucked into crevices. Keep an eye out for the smaller stuff here; the Atlantic yellow cowries are a favourite find, clinging to the coral, and we’ve even seen the miraculous pedipes – tiny, but a real treat if you know what you’re looking for. This site is wonderful for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a healthy reef and enjoy a slower pace. You won't find massive pelagics every time, but the abundance of smaller reef fish, shells like the milk conch, and the sheer variety of invertebrate life makes for a rewarding dive. We’d suggest going on a calm day; the visibility really pops, and you can spend ages just exploring the nooks and crannies. It’s a great spot for underwater photographers focusing on macro, or anyone who just loves to drift and observe without feeling rushed.
