Avalon Dive Park - California
Okay, so Avalon Dive Park. When people think California diving, they often picture the kelp forests, right? And Avalon delivers that in spades, but with a surprising twist – it’s a town pier, right in the heart of Avalon Bay. We love it because you’ve got easy access straight off the beach, which is a godsend when you’re lugging gear. Drop in, and you’re immediately enveloped by the towering kelp. Sunbeams slice through the canopy, dappling the sand below. It feels ancient down there. Keep an eye out for bat rays gliding past, or the grumpy-looking giant sea bass hanging out under the pier pylons – they’re huge, like underwater grandfathers. We’ve spotted nudibranchs galore, little colourful jewels against the kelp fronds. And the fish life, it’s not always the big stuff, but the sheer numbers of senoritas and blacksmiths swirling around you is impressive. Our favourite time to dive here is actually at night. The pier lights filtering down create this ethereal glow, and you’ll see creatures come out that hide during the day. Think octopuses on the prowl or even the occasional swell shark tucked into a crevice. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for warming up to California’s colder waters, or just enjoying a relaxed afternoon exploring the bay. Just watch out for boat traffic coming in and out of the harbour.
