Boulton Reef - Great Lakes
Arrecife Los Ballenatos, or "The Whales Reef," is one of those Grand Cayman spots we keep coming back to. It’s a proper Caribbean wall dive, dropping away into the deep blue, but what we really love is the top of the reef. It’s relatively shallow, a comfortable 12-15 metres, and just explodes with colour. You’ll find big clusters of elkhorn coral reaching for the sun, and the light here is usually incredible, especially in the mornings. We often spot schools of French grunts and bluestriped snapper congregating under ledges, and sometimes a curious hogfish will swim right up to your mask. Look closely among the coral heads for little post horn squid, they’re masters of camouflage. We’ve also had some fantastic encounters with great barracuda here, just hanging motionless in the current, watching everything. This site is great for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a healthy reef top before venturing over the edge of the wall. It’s perfect for a long, relaxed dive, especially if you take your time exploring the shallower sections.
