HEROIC (91 ft long wooden eastern rig dragger) - New England
Diving the HEROIC is like stepping back into New England’s fishing past, but with an eerie, beautiful twist. This 91-foot wooden dragger sits upright, a ghost of its former working life, now completely reclaimed by the sea. We love how the wooden hull has softened over time, draped in orange and yellow anemones that pulse gently in the current. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery – sometimes it's 20 feet of green murk, other days you get a glorious 50 feet and can make out the bow from the stern. Our favourite part is peeking into the collapsed stern, where you often find tautog lurking in the shadows, big, curious fish that don’t seem to mind divers. Down at 27 metres, you'll feel that characteristic chill of a New England dive, even in summer. This wreck is perfect for those who appreciate the quiet drama of a historical site and the way nature completely takes over. Just remember to bring a good light; even on brighter days, the deeper sections of the wreck absorb a lot of the ambient light.
