NORTH STAR (55 ft long wooden eastern rig dragger) - New England

The North Star, a 55-foot wooden eastern rig dragger, is a real character of a wreck, tucked away in the New England waters. Dropping down, you hit the deck at about 25 metres. It’s not a huge wreck, but its wooden bones, still largely intact, give it a different feel from the metal behemoths we often dive. We love poking around the bow, where the anchor chain still stretches out, and imagining the life it once had. What makes this site a standout for us is the way the ocean has reclaimed it. Schools of cunner dart through gaps in the hull, and we’ve often spotted lobsters tucked into crevices. The visibility can be typical New England moody, sometimes 10 metres, sometimes less, which only adds to the atmosphere. It’s a site for divers who appreciate history and don’t need an expansive swim-through. We’d suggest a good dive light to really appreciate the details and the critters making it home.
