O.J. Walker - New England

The O.J. Walker wreck, resting at just under 20 meters, is one of those New England dives that truly earns the "standout" label for us. It’s not about huge pelagics or technicolor coral here, but the sheer character of the wreck itself and the way freshwater life has made it home. We love the feeling of descending onto its timbers, knowing the history of this old steam barge. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery, typical of freshwater dives; we've seen it from a murky 3 meters to a respectable 10 on a calm day, so pick your conditions. Our favorite time is late morning after a few days of settled weather. The structure is largely intact, offering easy penetration into the cargo hold if you're comfortable with overhead environments. Inside, it’s dark and moody, perfect for spotting the resident brook trout lurking amongst the beams, a truly unusual sight for a wreck diver. Look closely, and you’ll often find Great Pond Snails clinging to the rust, a cool detail you wouldn’t get on a saltwater wreck. This isn't a dive for ticking off species, but rather for soaking in the atmosphere and appreciating a piece of submerged history. We think it’s best suited for experienced wreck divers who enjoy a challenge and a unique narrative, rather than beginners. It's a proper dive, full of texture and shadows.
