Unidentified Trawler Shipwreck - New England
The Unidentified Trawler, resting on its starboard side, feels like stepping back into a working boat, albeit one claimed by the sea. We’ve always found this wreck particularly atmospheric, especially on a day when the light filters down through the plankton bloom. You can easily spend an hour tracing the deck, peeking into the wheelhouse, and imagining the crew’s final moments. Our favourite detail is the intact stern; the rudder and propeller still stand proud, now encrusted with colourful anemones and sponges. It’s a spot where the wreck itself is the star, but the resident marine life adds plenty to the show. Look for plump lobsters tucked into every crevice, wolf eels peering from pipes, and schools of pollock circling the mast. We’d suggest a late morning dive, after the initial boat traffic but before any afternoon chop picks up. This wreck isn't for those seeking tropical colours, but if you appreciate history, a bit of chill in the water, and the quiet drama of New England’s cold-water ecosystems, you’ll love it.
