USS Algol - New England

The USS Algol isn’t just another hunk of metal on the seabed, it’s a proper expedition. We’re talking a big, intact wreck that sits upright, making navigation a lot easier even on lower visibility days. You really get a sense of its scale here, especially when you drop down and see the mast structures still reaching for the surface, often covered in anemones and hydroids that sway in the gentle surge. Our favourite part is exploring the cargo holds; they’re vast and surprisingly open in places, letting shafts of ambient light filter down. Look closely in the darker corners and you’ll find cunners and tautog darting between the corroded bulkheads, and sometimes a chunky lobster tucked away. It’s a deep dive, around 40 to 50 meters, so this is definitely one for experienced cold water wreck divers who are comfortable with decompression. We’d suggest diving this one on a calm day with minimal current; it makes the descent and ascent much more enjoyable.
