Papua Explorers Resort - Raja Ampat

The team at Papua Explorers Resort are, simply put, some of our favourite people in Raja Ampat. We’ve stayed in a fair few places in the Dampier Strait over the years, and for a relaxed, professional operation that consistently delivers fantastic diving, this is high on our list. They run PADI courses, but we’d suggest that if you’re coming all the way here, you’re probably already certified and ready to explore some serious reefs. What we love is their commitment to smaller groups. You’re not just another diver on a cattle boat; the guides really take the time to point out the little things – the pygmy seahorses camouflaged on a gorgonian, the subtle dance of a harlequin shrimp. We always feel like we’re spotting something new, even on sites we’ve dived multiple times. The sheer volume of fish on places like Cape Kri is something you have to experience: fusiliers, jacks, barracuda, sometimes so thick they block the sun. Our favourite tip? Ask for an early morning dive if you can – the light is softer, and the reef sharks are often still cruising the shallower sections before the day warms up. If you’re looking for a comfortable stay with passionate guides who know their stuff, Papua Explorers is a solid choice.
