Timur 2 - Sulawesi

Timur 2 is one of those spots where everything just clicks. We’re talking about a sloping reef, really more of a gentle incline, that’s just plastered in Staghorn coral. Not just a few patches, but vast, sprawling fields of it. It feels like swimming over an ancient, submerged forest. We’ve drifted along here, watching sapphire demoiselles dart through the branches, shimmering like scattered jewels. Keep an eye out for Pacific cornetfish, too, sometimes they’ll ghost past, surprisingly large against the reef. We love it for its sheer, understated beauty. It’s not about huge pelagics every time, though blacktip reef sharks do cruise by occasionally, and we’ve even had a few truly lucky whale shark encounters here. Timur 2 is more about the subtle details: the pink anemonefish peeking from its host, a chocolate chip sea star lumbering across the sand, or a tiny wasp pygmy goby tucked into its coral hideaway. The currents are generally mild, making it a relaxed drift, perfect for photographers or anyone who just wants to soak it all in. Come mid-morning for the best light on the coral.
