    Depth Limits in Scuba Diving

Your maximum depth is determined by a combination of your certification level, experience, gas mix, and personal comfort. Certification agencies set limits based on the training you've received, but experience and judgement matter just as much.

    Why Depth Limits Exist

    • Nitrogen narcosis - impairs judgement beyond ~30m on air, worsens with depth
    • Oxygen toxicity - risk of seizures when ppO2 exceeds 1.4-1.6 bar
    • Decompression obligation - no-deco limits shrink rapidly below 30m
    • Gas supply - you consume gas proportionally faster at depth
    • Emergency response - problems at depth are harder to manage and have higher consequences

    Progressing Safely

The best approach is gradual progression. After getting your Advanced Open Water, don't immediately dive to 30m. Build up in 5m increments across multiple dives, mastering buoyancy and air management at each depth before going deeper. Most diving accidents happen when divers exceed their training or experience level.
