Why Divers Need Unit Conversions
The diving world is split between metric and imperial systems. Most of the world dives in metres and bar, while the US and some Caribbean destinations use feet and PSI. If you're trained in one system and travel somewhere using the other, quick conversions are essential for safe dive planning.
Common Conversions to Know
- 1 bar ≈ 14.5 PSI - a full 200 bar tank is about 2,900 PSI
- 1 metre ≈ 3.28 feet - the 40m recreational limit is 130 feet
- °C to °F - 24°C (comfortable tropical) = 75°F; 10°C (cold) = 50°F
- 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs - useful for weight belt calculations
- 1 litre ≈ 0.035 ft³ - a 12L tank is about 80 ft³ (an "AL80")
