    Cylinder size: litres vs cubic feet

    A 12L cylinder holds 12 litres of water. An AL80 holds about 80 ft³ of gas when full. To compare them you need the working pressure as well.

    Metric rating to gas capacity

    Holds about 2748 L of gas = 97 ft³ (at 3365 psi)

    US rating to water volume

    Water volume about 11.1 L (at 207 bar)

    Ideal-gas estimate. Real cylinders hold a little less at high pressure, and US ratings are nominal (an AL80 actually holds about 77 ft³).

    Why Divers Need Unit Conversions

    The diving world is split between metric and imperial systems. Most of the world dives in metres and bar, while the US and some Caribbean destinations use feet and PSI. If you're trained in one system and travel somewhere using the other, quick conversions are essential for safe dive planning.

    Common Conversions to Know

    • 1 bar ≈ 14.5 PSI - a full 200 bar tank is about 2,900 PSI
    • 1 metre ≈ 3.28 feet - the 40m recreational limit is 130 feet
    • °C to °F - 24°C (comfortable tropical) = 75°F; 10°C (cold) = 50°F
    • 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lbs - useful for weight belt calculations
    • Cylinder sizes - litres (12L) measure water volume, cubic feet (AL80) measure the gas inside. A 12L at 232 bar holds about 97 ft³ of gas; an AL80 is an 11.1L cylinder. Use the cylinder converter above
