Carouso Mio - Loyalty Islands

Flat Rock, especially that Turtle Cave, is one of those Sydney sites we keep coming back to. Forget what you might hear about tricky shore entries elsewhere; this one is surprisingly manageable, though a boat dive means less huffing. We usually drop in and drift, letting the water carry us through the cave. It’s not a deep dive, around 10 metres inside, but it’s packed. Light filters in, making the resident schools of yellowtail kingfish and bullseye glitter. We've seen banjo sharks tucked into crevices, and a lazy Port Jackson or two often cruises past. The cave itself is more of a swim-through, wide enough you don't feel squeezed, and the rock formations are interesting enough on their own. Our advice? Go on a calm day; the visibility really pops then, often pushing 15 metres. It’s a site that suits pretty much everyone, even newer divers, as long as you respect the surge if it’s running.
