Chemin des écoliers - Loyalty Islands

Golden Gate is one of our favourite Taveuni dives, a lone coral pinnacle rising from the sand. It’s a site that feels a little like an oasis, drawing in all sorts. The big draw here is the swim-through at the base, an archway with three openings. We love taking our time in there, drifting through the golden soft corals that line the ceiling. Look out for the hanging clams, their mantles rippling. Outside, the bommie is alive. Schools of Ambon pullers and Philippine damsels swarm the coral, parting as you approach. We’ve seen blacktip reef sharks cruise by on the sandy perimeter more than once. The current can circle, so we'd suggest dropping in and letting the dive master guide you around the sheltered side. It's a great spot for photographers, especially inside the swim-through where the light plays beautifully. Expect to spend your dive slowly circling the bommie, ducking into overhangs to spot cardinalfish and soldierfish. The main swim-through is a highlight, a natural frame for those golden soft corals and resident clams. This site suits divers who appreciate a more intimate exploration, where patience reveals many small wonders.
