Cobb Reef - Barbuda
Mad Moll Reef, Nova Scotia. We’re going to be upfront: this isn't your typical colourful tropical dive. Forget the warm, gin-clear water. This is proper temperate diving, a little rugged, a little wild, and exactly what we love about the North Atlantic. What you lose in coral pastels, you gain in fascinating macro life and that incredible feeling of being somewhere few divers venture. The reef here is less about hard corals and more about the intricate, swaying tapestry of kelp and seaweeds. Think vast beds of knotted wrack, Irish moss, and oarweed, providing shelter for a surprising number of critters. We’ve spent dives just slowly finning through the kelp forests, spotting small fish darting between the fronds. Keep an eye out for bull rout nestled amongst the rocks, and if you’re lucky, an American eel snaking its way through the crevices. Surface intervals often bring views of seabirds like common scoters or perhaps even a Wilson’s Storm Petrel skimming the waves – a nice bonus. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the subtle beauty, who are happy to slow down and really look. Expect cool water, decent visibility on a good day, and a real sense of adventure.
