POLROSA - Barbuda

The Polrosa, a hulking mailboat that met its end in 1915, is less a wreck dive and more an underwater exploration of history. We love it because it’s shallow, only ten metres deep, meaning you get plenty of bottom time to really soak it all in. The sheer size of this thing is impressive – over a hundred metres long – and it’s broken up enough that you can still make out its form without feeling like you’re just swimming over a pile of scrap. What we really enjoy are the big structural pieces. Massive plates of steel, some bent at impossible angles, are now completely overgrown with sponges and soft corals. Look closely for the schools of grunts and snappers that hang out in the shadowy recesses. We often spot moray eels tucked away, just their heads peeking out. It’s a great site for photographers who appreciate the drama of a large, historically significant wreck. You can spend a whole dive just picking out different sections, imagining its journey from Liverpool before Barbuda claimed it.
