COURIER - Abaco

The Courier wreck, what a story. It’s barely four metres deep, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's just another shallow potter. This isn't some purpose-sunk artificial reef; the Courier, originally the Billy B, found its watery grave after being caught doing something rather illicit back in the 70s. We love that kind of history. What you get is a fantastically broken-up freighter, spread across a sandy bottom. The bow section is still pretty intact, and we always find ourselves exploring its nooks and crannies. Light shafts through the broken plating, illuminating clouds of schooling silversides. Inside, you'll often spot glassy sweepers tucked away, and the resident snapper population seems to grow with every visit. Moray eels are practically guaranteed, poking their heads from the hull. It’s a photographer’s dream, especially when the sun is high and that Bahamian light does its magic. We'd suggest going early to avoid any boat traffic, but really, any time is a good time for the Courier. Perfect for new divers getting their first taste of wreck penetration, or for experienced eyes who appreciate a bit of character.
