INISHOWEN - Abaco

Inishowen, on the eastern side of North Abaco, is less a dive and more a poignant snorkel or freedive, especially if you’re a history buff. We’re talking about a wreck so shallow, its stern actually breaks the surface at low tide, visible from the shore. This isn't your deep, penetrable wreck, but its story is what gives it character. The old yacht, a victim of Hurricane Dorian, lies completely exposed to the elements, and that constant surge of water has transformed it into a vibrant, if shallow, ecosystem. You’ll find a surprising amount of life clinging to what’s left of the hull. Small snapper dart in and out of the skeletal remains, and we’ve spotted juvenile barracuda holding perfectly still in the gentle current. It’s a great spot for honing your breath-hold, weaving around the broken masts and superstructure, seeing how the light plays through the gaps. We love coming here late afternoon; the golden hour light makes the rust glow and throws long, dancing shadows, adding to the melancholic beauty. It’s certainly not for the adrenaline junkies, but if you appreciate a wreck with a story you can almost touch, Inishowen offers a unique, reflective experience.
