GANGMAR - Eleuthera & Harbour Island

Gangmar isn't your typical wreck dive, and that's precisely why we love it. Sunk in 1977 after a fire and explosion, this motor vessel sits in just nine metres, making it an ideal spot for an extended exploration. What you’ll find isn't one intact hull, but a spread of fascinating wreckage: twisted metal, sections of the superstructure, and machinery scattered across the sandy bottom. The shallow depth means sunlight penetrates everywhere, illuminating the incredible colours of the sponges and soft corals that have colonised every surface. We’ve spent hours here, meticulously tracing the outlines of what was once a working ship. Look out for the resident parrotfish nibbling at the growth, and we often spot nurse sharks tucked under larger sections of debris. It’s not about penetration, it’s about piecing together the story of the wreck itself. For photographers, the light is incredible, and the absence of strong current makes it a relaxed, rewarding dive for anyone who enjoys history and observing the reclamation of steel by the sea.
