MOBRO 1208 - Long Island

The MOBRO 1208 isn't a deep dive, not by a long shot. We're talking two metres, max, just off the beach on Long Island. But what it lacks in depth, it absolutely makes up for in character. This old barge, washed ashore in '92, sits split and scattered, creating a fantastic playground for snorkelers and freedivers. We love finning slowly over the mangled steel plates, watching schools of sergeant majors dart through the gaps. The best time to visit is on a calm day when the sun is high – the light penetrates right to the bottom, illuminating the rust-coloured wreckage. Look closely, and you'll spot plenty of juvenile fish hiding in the crevices, and we’ve even seen small nurse sharks cruising the sandy bottom nearby. It's a proper wreck experience without needing tanks, making it our pick for an easy afternoon exploring right from the shore.
