FishPot - Shore Dive - West Coast
Kohanee, for us, is one of those sites that just feels alive. It’s the last stretch of reef before the Atlantic really opens up, and you can feel that exposure in the surge and the sheer volume of life. Down at 19 metres, the reef is a riot of colour and texture; those huge elephant ear and barrel sponges really dominate, punctuated by gorgonians and sea plumes swaying in the current. We love the constant flow of smaller fish - thick schools of fusiliers, which always brings in the bigger hunters. We’ve seen plenty of trumpetfish here, and the sand patches often hide shy brotulas if you’re patient. Look closely in the coral heads for diamond blennies peering out, or the bright flash of a flamefish. Visibility averages 16 metres, which is decent enough for soaking it all in. This site is a great pick for divers who appreciate a lively, current-swept reef rather than a sleepy drift. It’s a proper fish soup, and we’d suggest going at slack tide if you’re not keen on a workout, but even with a bit of push, it’s worth it.
