Columbus Reef

Columbus Reef on Utila’s south side is a site we’ve always enjoyed, though it sometimes gets overlooked for the flashier walls. It’s a gentle, sloping reef, topping out around 10 meters and spilling down to a sandy bottom at 20m. We love it for its sheer density of coral, especially the finger corals and impressive stands of lettuce coral that just glow in the sunlight. You'll see so many juvenile fish darting amongst the coral heads here – tiny hamlets, damselfish, and schools of French grunts that shimmer like quicksilver. Keep an eye out for the green sea urchins tucked into crevices. The visibility here is generally excellent, often pushing past 25 meters, making it a brilliant spot for photographers who appreciate a well-lit reef. It’s a pretty easy dive, suitable for all levels, and we’d suggest going in the morning before the wind picks up, or if you want a calmer afternoon, pick a day with a northerly breeze. Don’t expect huge pelagics, but the macro life and the sheer health of the reef are the real draw. It's a proper coral garden, and we find it deeply calming.
