Brown Trousers - Taveuni & Somosomo Strait

Brown Trousers is a bit of a trek, a good 20-25 minutes by boat out to the Yasawa chain's outer reef. Honestly, you need calm seas to even consider it, but when conditions are right, it’s absolutely worth the journey. We love it for the blend of shallow caverns and the explosion of soft corals that carpet every surface. Drop in and you're immediately enveloped in a kaleidoscope. The soft corals here are just incredible, swaying gently with any surge, creating these living, breathing hallways you can navigate through. It’s not a deep dive, maxing out around 17 metres, which means plenty of bottom time to really explore. We’ve spent ages here just picking apart the details – tiny cowries tucked into crevices, little post horn squids jetting past, and if you’re lucky, a chambered nautilus might drift by. The light filtering into the caverns is something else, shafts of blue piercing the gloom. Visibility usually hovers around 16 metres, which is more than enough to appreciate the intricate beauty. Brown Trousers is an ideal spot for photographers and anyone who loves to slow down and truly observe. It’s a macro heaven, but don’t discount the occasional pelagic visitor that cruises by on the outer edges.
