Why dive here
With 190+ marine species recorded in the area - including blacktip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, sperm whales, thresher sharks and lionfish - Reef Patch offers some of Christmas Island (Kiritimati)'s richest reef diving. Water ranges 27-29°C, warmest June, July, August.
Reef Patch is one of those sites that just feels… *alive*. You drop in and it’s an immediate wall of fish. Not just a few stragglers, we’re talking about massive schools of Twinstripe Fusiliers that part around you as you swim through them. It’s like being inside a shimmering, silver tunnel, honestly. We love it for the sheer density of everyday reef fish. You’ll see Bluelined Surgeonfish everywhere, often with a curious Blackside Hawkfish perched on a coral head nearby, just watching you pass. The corals here, especially the Staghorn and Corrugated varieties, are in fantastic shape and host so many little critters. Keep an eye out for Snakehead Cowries tucked away and those Tiny Rock Crabs scuttling across the rock. The beauty of Reef Patch is its accessibility. It's a forgiving dive, generally mild currents, making it perfect for an easy afternoon after a driftier morning. We’d suggest a slow, deliberate pace to really appreciate the details – the Fat-handed Snapping Shrimp darting back into their holes, or the subtle colour changes on a Rivulated Parrotfish as it grazes. It’s a comfortable, visually rich dive that genuinely makes you feel part of the ecosystem.
