Why dive here
With 190+ marine species recorded in the area - including blacktip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, sperm whales, thresher sharks and lionfish - Reef Patch offers some of Christmas Island (Kiritimati)'s richest reef diving. Water ranges 27-29°C, warmest June, July, August.
Reef Patch, right here on Christmas Island, always brings a smile to our faces. It's a proper coral showcase, not a deep wall or a drift, just a fantastic expanse of hard corals, stretching out like an intricate underwater garden. We've spent countless hours here, finding new things every time. What makes it special? The sheer density of healthy coral. You’ll weave through massive colonies of Starflower coral and huge plates of Largebrain Root Coral, the kind that feels ancient. It’s a macro dream, too. We’ve spotted countless Scaledcheek Gobies darting into their burrows, and the Strawberry Drupes, with their vibrant shells, are a regular treat. Look closely and you might even find an Eroded Cowry clinging to the coral. The light here, especially in the late morning, really makes the colours pop, painting the reef in shades of blue and purple. This spot is fantastic for photographers, or anyone who just wants to slow down and truly absorb a reef. There’s no rush, no strong current to fight, just pure exploration. We love just hovering, watching the Dusky Farmerfish tend their territories and the Bicolor Parrotfish crunching on coral. It's a calm, meditative dive, perfect for appreciating the smaller wonders.
