Mitsubishi G3M ’Nell’ (Wreck) - Gizo & Western Province

The Nell is one of those Solomon Islands wrecks we love for its accessibility and sheer historical presence. Just three metres down, she’s a Mitsubishi G3M bomber, lying inverted in the sand, and the visibility here is usually excellent. You’ll spend most of your time exploring the surprisingly intact fuselage and the wing sections, which still have their engines attached. It's a proper shallow-water history lesson, perfect for new divers or anyone wanting a relaxed second dive. We’ve seen schools of snapper congregating around the wreckage, and small reef sharks often cruise by. The engine cowling makes a great hideout for smaller reef fish, and we always spot a few colourful nudibranchs clinging to the coral growth that’s started to colonise the metal. Our favourite part has to be finning slowly along the length of the plane, imagining the history beneath you. Go early in the morning to catch the best light and avoid any boat traffic.
