Vought F4U Corsair (Wreck) - Gizo & Western Province

Dropping onto the Corsair wreck at 32 metres, you really feel that shift in pressure. It’s quiet down there, and the aircraft just materialises out of the blue, sitting upright and intact. We love how complete this one is – the distinctive inverted gull wings are still there, along with the cockpit and engine block. It’s a true piece of history preserved, a snapshot from WWII when it went down during a strafing run. Look closely and you’ll find damselfish flitting around the fuselage and tiny gobies perched on the metal, blending in perfectly. Our favourite part has to be the coral growth, especially the delicate soft corals that have started to bloom on the propeller blades, giving it a ghostly, organic feel. This site is brilliant for intermediate divers keen on war history and wreck photography. Just remember, it’s a deep dive, so watch your bottom time and come prepared for the low light conditions.
