Eco Dive School Cabo Verde - Sal
Douglas Rock is one of those places that reminds you why cold water diving grabs hold. It’s rugged, raw, and utterly Alaskan. We love the sheer drama of the site, a solitary rock column punching up from the depths, completely exposed to the elements. You’re descending into deep green water, surrounded by giant kelp swaying in the surge, and the light filters down in shifting shafts. It’s moody, in the best possible way. Visibility here can swing wildly, but when it's good, say 15 meters, the rock face reveals an explosion of color. We’re talking electric red soft corals clinging to every crevice, creating an almost alien landscape. Look closely and you’ll find Big Skates resting on sandy patches, their strange, ancient forms a real treat. We often spot massive Sunflower Stars slowly making their way across the rock, their dozens of arms a spectacle. And keep an eye out for the odd Giant Octopus tucked into a den – they’re masters of camouflage here. This site is for divers who appreciate the wild side of the ocean, who aren't afraid of a bit of swell, and who want to see Alaska’s underwater world in all its untamed glory. Best dived on a slack tide, which is usually right around high or low water; check your tables carefully. We find the marine life is much more relaxed then, and you’re not fighting the currents.
