KEMMEL - Santo Antão
We love the Kemmel for its simplicity and the sheer joy of a shallow wreck. It’s a proper ship, though, not just a pile of metal. You’re only ever five metres down, which means long bottom times and plenty of light filtering through the water. We’ve spent entire afternoons here, spotting everything from morays poking out of nooks to schools of glasseye snapper swarming in the holds. What makes the Kemmel special is how accessible it is. You can practically snorkel it, but getting down there with a tank lets you properly appreciate the scale. The bow lies mostly intact, still recognisable, and the propeller shaft is a real highlight. Look for the resident parrotfish grazing on the algae, their crunching almost audible. It’s an ideal site for macro enthusiasts or newer divers wanting a gentle introduction to wreck diving. Visibility can sometimes drop after a storm, but generally, it’s a calm, bright spot perfect for extended exploration. We always suggest going in the morning; the light is best then.
