Navio a Vapor - Santo Antão

Navio a Vapor isn’t your typical deep-water behemoth, but it’s still one of our favourite shallow wrecks in Cape Verde. This old steamer, thought to be the *SS Thames*, ran aground way back in 1913, and now it sits in just 14 metres of water, perfectly preserved by the gentle Atlantic. You can spend a whole dive just circling the main structure, spotting the huge anchor chain draped across the bow and peering into the collapsed holds. We love how the light filters down, illuminating the rusted metal, making the schools of cardinalfish glow with a soft red hue as they dart in and out of the shadows. It’s an ideal site for anyone looking for a relaxed dive, especially those new to wreck exploration. Even experienced divers will enjoy just soaking up the history and observing how the sea has reclaimed this old vessel. Keep an eye out for resident moray eels peeking from crevices and the occasional scorpionfish camouflaged on the deck plates. Our tip? Go in the morning; the visibility tends to be best then, and the light really brings out the wreck's character.
